The Nose Job, the Procedure (and Why They Call it Rhinoplasty)
Sometime around 1845, the word Rhinoplasty was introduced to our lexicon. While it is perhaps not the most complimentary-sounding word, the results that the procedure delivers certainly are. Rhinoplasty is the proper term for what most of us simply know as a ‘nose job’. (So we understand the word “Rhinoplasty,” and not be offended by what could be misconstrued as a process to reshape a misshapen a nose; the actual word is Greek in root—rhis=nose, and plassein=to shape. That is comforting to realize, if one didn’t know what the word Rhinoplasty really represented.)
The Rhinoplasty procedure is among the five most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States. By sculpting the cartilage and bone of the nose, surgeons give patients a new look and renewed self-confidence. Rhinoplasty restores balance to facial features by changing the size and shape of the nose and can simultaneously mitigate nasal structural problems, including respiratory impairment.
Patients considering this type of reconstructive surgery often have noses that are disproportionately large for their faces, flared or pinched nostrils, crooked or asymmetrical noses or protruding bridges. Whether the complaint is about a bump, a hump or a ski jump, men and women who are displeased with the size and shape of their nose can have almost any characteristic corrected by a reputable, board-certified surgeon.
What to Expect
Depending on the goals of the procedure, Rhinoplasty operation complexity varies significantly. Accordingly, levels of discomfort and recovery time do as well. A patient should anticipate at least 8 weeks for a full recovery and should plan to take 2 weeks off from work at the minimum. A ride home from the procedure is a must and having a care taker at home for at least a couple of days after the procedure is advisable.
Chewing can be uncomfortable after the procedure, so soft foods are recommended. As with any surgery, it is advisable to abstain from alcohol and tobacco use before and after the operation. Patients should be well rested, in good health and mentally prepared for the amazing transformation they are about to undergo.
How About Pain?
Because Rhinoplasty entails reshaping bone and cartilage in the nose, significant discomfort is to be expected afterwards. And because pain is a big concern for those considering rhinoplasty, we want to spend some time on the topic:
There’s really no getting around some of the post-operative discomfort patients feel. The face is an extremely sensitive part of the body by design, so neurons and pain receptors certainly let patients know that a significant alteration has occurred. The key to ensuring optimal aesthetic outcomes, accelerating recovery and minimizing pain lies with choosing the best surgeon. Think of dentistry: Twenty years ago, it was accepted that a trip to the dentist was going to be uncomfortable, if not downright painful. That’s no longer the case. In fact, reputable dentists today do everything they can to eliminate pain from standard practice. Comfort and pain avoidance are leading metrics by which they are evaluated and to which they owe their reputations. While sculpting bone in the septum and bridge of nose is different than polishing teeth or fitting a retainer, the same principals apply.

Men and Plastic Surgery: Top Trending Procedures in 2017
When you hear the term Plastic Surgery, normally one thinks of a woman who has taken good care of herself, works hard to keep her age a secret, and does what it takes to keep her appearance fresh and lively and her body in great shape and form. What you may not realize when Plastic Surgery is brought up, is that men are more and more often requesting and receiving plastic surgery for the same reasons that women choose plastic surgery. “One study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that there has been a 20% increase in the number of men undergoing plastic surgery procedures, and most of those are minimally invasive surgeries like fillers or botox.”
Here at Talbott MD Plastic Surgery Reno, we’ve worked with amazing male patients to help them improve certain areas of their body where exercise didn’t work, or to assist them to reduce common signs of aging. These are the top eight trending plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures that our male patients tend to call in about and receive treatments for:
- Botox: Botox® in Reno, NV is administered by Dr. Talbott as a nonsurgical treatment that is injected specifically into the muscles between the brows. Botox works by blocking nerve-driving forces to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle movement that causes lines and wrinkles between the brows. (This treatment gets the #1 spot because it even has a nickname: “Bro Tox!”)
The Five Most Popular Types of Male Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery isn’t just for women. In fact, an increasing number of men are seeking out cosmetic procedures as a way to enhance their appearance. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, “More men are turning to aesthetic cosmetic procedures, with dramatic increases seen in both surgical and nonsurgical options over the past 5 years and a 43 percent increase overall.”
Since the organization began collecting statistical data in 1997, there has been a 273 percent increase in the number of male plastic surgery procedures performed. The increasing availability and diversity of cosmetic procedures has no doubt contributed to the growing number of male patients. Many cosmetic surgeons also conjecture that the competitive job market has driven more men to seek out cosmetic surgery.
Whether their intention is to look younger, thinner, or more handsome, these are the five types of plastic surgery that are most sought after by men:

Out of Town Information
For patients who are traveling from out of town to see Dr. Talbott, our staff will make every effort to accommodate you. Our office is located 10 minutes northwest from Reno International Airport. We recommend that you contact our office to find out about the availability of specific dates for your consultation or procedure.
You can contact Dr. Talbott, complete an online consultation request detailing the changes that you desire, and include photographs of the areas of concern. It is most beneficial to send front and side views, as well as a back view when necessary. Please include whether or not you have any medical conditions, and also list any medications, vitamins, or supplements that you may be taking. Once these have been reviewed, our staff will set up a personal phone consultation to discuss your surgery.
Our office can also assist you with making local arrangements if needed. Dr. Talbott has arrangements with several local hotels that are comfortable for recovery. For patients that may require post-operative care, our office can also arrange for private assistance during the time of your recovery.
Planning Guide For Out of Town Patients
Here at Dr. Talbott’s office we have dedicated staff used to dealing with out of town/ country patients. We understand that there are different factors involved in traveling abroad for a plastic surgery procedure, so we are putting together this guide to help in your planning.
There are two scenarios when it comes to our out of town/ country patients. Those that are able to fly in for a face-to-face initial consultation and those who choose to have a phone consultation with Dr. Talbott. Either way, it can be done.
If you are one of those who can actually come in for a consultation we will make you a priority and adjust our schedule to accommodate your dates. On the consultation day, you will meet with Dr. Talbott and go over your desired procedure. You will leave the office with a package especially made for you with all important information, including a price quote. The package will also include the list of the necessary pre-op medical clearances, which can be done by your own doctor.
In the event that flying for your consultation is not an alternative, a phone consultation can be arranged. Dr. Talbott MUST have your pictures, so she can better address your needs. Once we have received your photos and medical information, and you have spoken to Dr. Talbott, we can either mail or fax out a package especially made for you with all important information including a price quote. The package will also include the list of the necessary pre-op medical clearances, which can be done by your own doctor. Our office will be available to answer any questions that you may have via phone or email, whichever is more convenient for you.
We will need your lab work and medical clearance to arrive two weeks before the surgery date. Depending on your age and procedure, there may be different requirements. We will do everything to help you with this process. Safety is the highest priority!
There are many different options such as financing and other forms of payments that can be discussed once you have finalized your decisions. Locking in a date requires an initial deposit of 20% and that can be done over the phone with a credit card. We do not accept credit cards on the day of surgery so you will need to make arrangements for your final payment before you arrive. This is due to the fact that we want you to focus on your surgery and not have any possible financial complications at the last minute.
When planning for your surgery, you also need to consider where you are going to stay and who will be taking care of you. On our website you will find hotels that are close to our facilities. It is a requirement that all patients be monitored for at least the first 24 hours following surgery.
If you are alone, we have a care agency, which provides qualified caregivers who are familiar with plastic surgery recovery. This agency can also assist in the following: driving you from the surgery location to the recovery location; driving you to your follow-up visits; perform housekeeping, including laundry, dishes, and cleaning linens; prepare meals and drinks; general shopping and grocery shopping; run errands, such as prescription pick up and dry cleaning; perform hygiene and personal care, including bathing, grooming, and toileting; assist with wound care and apply cold packs as needed; assist with walking, dressing, and communicating with doctor’s and nursing staff; and provide companionship and emotional support.
Planning Your Stay
Dr. Talbott prefers that patients arrive at least one day prior to surgery. This will allow Dr. Talbott and our staff to meet with you in person and go over any questions or concerns that you may have. You should allow sufficient time in Reno for your recovery. Recovery time duration, of course, depends on the extent of surgery you have. In general, most patients are able to travel one week following surgery.
Here are some general timelines when figuring out your minimum stay with us. Please keep in mind that these can change depending on your own personal healing process.
- Breast Augmentation: 3-4 Days (Go home same day)
Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Often a sign of aging, droopy eyelids can make individuals appear falsely tired, melancholic, or older than they actually are. Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, can restore an alert, youthful, and cheerful appearance to droopy eyelids, and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles that develop around the eyes as a result of aging. Eyelid surgery in Reno can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, and is commonly performed on both, at the same time. Depending on which version or versions are chosen, eyelid surgery can eliminate extra skin and fat around the eyes that hinder vision, and get rid of bags that develop under the eyes.
Eyelid Surgery Procedure
During the blepharoplasty procedure, small incisions are made in the crease of the upper eyelid or along the lash line of the lower eyelid. The incisions are strategically placed to minimize the visibility of scarring after surgery. Next, excess skin and fat are trimmed away. Finally, the incisions are closed with fine sutures. Blepharoplasty surgery typically takes one to two hours and can be combined with a facelift, rhinoplasty, or another plastic procedure for the ultimate makeover.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
After eyelid surgery, patients should expect some redness, bruising, swelling, and soreness around the incision area, which should subside in a couple of weeks. Other side effects may include dry or teary eyes, as well as some sensitivity to light. Dr. Talbott can prescribe medication to reduce discomfort or pain. She will also inform the patients of special post-operative instructions that can help expedite the healing process. With the proper post-surgical care, patients are able to resume normal activities after approximately two weeks. To schedule a consultation with Dr. La Dawn Talbott for eyelid surgery in Reno, contact our practice today.

Endoscopic Brow Lift
In addition to facelift surgery, we also offer exceptional endoscopic brow lift surgery for patients who require less extensive facial rejuvenation. Endoscopic brow lift surgery is effective at lifting the brow line, thus reducing the prominence of wrinkles and creases that develop on the forehead as a result of the natural aging process. The procedure is less invasive than a full facelift, but the procedure can reverse the visible effects of aging just as dramatically, restoring an alert and youthful appearance with fewer incisions. The result is minimal scarring and a faster recovery.
Endoscopic Brow Lift Procedure
During endoscopic brow lift surgery, tiny incisions are made just above the hairline. Dr. Talbott uses an endoscope, tiny camera with a light, to guide her through the entire process. She removes excess tissue and fat from the forehead and then slightly lifts the skin to smooth out wrinkles and elevate the eyebrows. Next, the skin is fastened in its new place. Endoscopic brow lift surgery can be combined with a neck lift procedure, rhinoplasty, or another procedure to create a completely rejuvenated appearance.
Endoscopic Brow Lift Recovery
Many patients choose to undergo endoscopic brow lift surgery because it requires less recovery time and leaves very little scarring in comparison to a traditional brow lift or facelift surgery. Some pain, swelling, and numbness may be experienced for a few days, but medication can be prescribed to treat any discomfort. Most patients can enjoy their new, youthful appearance within one week after the procedure. To learn more about endoscopic brow lift surgery, contact our Reno plastic surgery center and schedule a consultation.
