Mastectomy surgery, or the surgical removal of the breast, can save the life of a person battling breast cancer. However, one unfortunate but unavoidable consequence is a drastic loss of breast tissue that can leave a woman feeling that she has lost an aspect of her femininity. Fortunately, Dr. Talbott can help through breast reconstruction surgery. A reconstructed breast not only restores the appearance of the bust, but also restores self-confidence and provides a feeling of wellness and recovery.
Breast Reconstruction Procedure
Breast reconstruction surgery is an extensive operation that is often completed in multiple stages over a period of months. Reconstruction can be performed at the time of mastectomy (immediate) or later (delayed).
Fortunately, the many options for reconstructive breast surgery can be grouped into these two categories:
- Expander/ Implant Reconstruction
In expander/ implant reconstruction, an expander is inserted gently into the breast area over the course of several weeks. During this time, saline will be added to the expander in multiple office visits. Once the skin has expanded to the desired size, Dr. Talbott replaces the expander with either a silicone or saline implant to recreate the breast mound.
- Autologous Reconstruction (use one’s own tissue)
In autologous reconstruction, the patient’s own tissue taken from the abdomen, back, or buttocks is used to reconstruct the breast. This tissue, consisting of skin, fat, and muscle, is called a flap. Flap reconstruction results in a new breast that looks and feels all natural.
Recovery from Breast Reconstruction
Flap reconstruction entails a longer recovery, taking six weeks to return to full activity. Pain and discomfort can be expected during this time. Expander/ implant reconstruction has a quicker, easier recovery.
Patients may regain some feeling in their breasts, though normal sensation can never be fully recovered. Scars will remain visible during most of the healing process, but they will fade over time. Patients who choose breast reconstruction surgery find that the drawbacks of permanent scarring are outweighed by the overall benefits of the procedure.
