It’s a sad reality, but no matter how much you exercise or how religiously you follow a healthy diet, you may still end up with pockets of excess fat.

That’s why more and more people are turning to liposuction to sculpt and improve the contours of their bodies. This surgical procedure, which is still one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, uses a suction device to remove fat cells from certain parts of the body. It is not intended as a substitute for weight loss.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. LaDawn Talbott performs liposuction in combination with skin tightening procedures (Vaser/Renuvion) to eliminate these localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Her highly individualized approach takes into account the patient’s physical condition, lifestyle habits, and personal goals to ensure beautiful and natural-looking results – something all her patients love!

Who’s a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction are individuals who are of relatively normal body weight, but have isolated pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Ideally, these individuals should also have healthy, elastic skin, which helps in contouring and reshaping.

Candidates should also be psychologically stable and have realistic expectations of the outcome.

Which body areas can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction in Reno, NV can address and shape virtually any area of the body, including:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs and knees, ankles
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Back
  • Face, chin, and neck

Dr. Talbott often performs liposuction surgery with a tummy tuck to give patients a more sculpted appearance to the midsection. To learn more about this combination, read our blog post Tummy Tuck and Liposuction: Can They Be Combined?

What happens during liposuction?

When performing liposuction surgery, Dr. Talbott makes a small and very discreet incision through which a hollow tube (a cannula) is inserted. The cannula is eased back and forth under the skin to gently vacuum out the fatty tissue. After the excess fat has been vacuumed out, the incision will be left open to drain. Depending upon the size of the area designated for treatment, the entire liposuction procedure typically takes one to three hours to complete.

Liposuction is often performed as an outpatient procedure where patients are put under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with an oral sedative.

In some cases, Dr. Talbott may perform liposuction using vaser energy. The vaser utilizes heat energy to melt the fat. More importantly, the heat energy allows skin contraction and tightening.

What can patients expect after liposuction surgery?

After the procedure, patients are required to wear a compression girdle for up to four weeks. Some swelling, bruising, and soreness should be expected following surgery, but these symptoms usually subside within a few weeks.

The recovery period for liposuction depends on how much fat was removed. Most patients, however, are able to return to their normal routine after two days. Strenuous activities, like exercise and any kind of heavy lifting, can be undertaken a week or two following the procedure.

Although scars from the procedure will never completely disappear, they are typically very small and will fade with time. Dr. Talbott gives patients thorough post-operative care instructions that should be followed to ensure proper healing and speedy recovery.
