Men and Plastic Surgery: Top Trending Procedures in 2017

male plastic surgery trendsWhen you hear the term Plastic Surgery, normally one thinks of a woman who has taken good care of herself, works hard to keep her age a secret, and does what it takes to keep her appearance fresh and lively and her body in great shape and form. What you may not realize when Plastic Surgery is brought up, is that men are more and more often requesting and receiving plastic surgery for the same reasons that women choose plastic surgery. “One study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that there has been a 20% increase in the number of men undergoing plastic surgery procedures, and most of those are minimally invasive surgeries like fillers or botox.”

Here at Talbott MD Plastic Surgery Reno, we’ve worked with amazing male patients to help them improve certain areas of their body where exercise didn’t work, or to assist them to reduce common signs of aging. These are the top eight trending plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures that our male patients tend to call in about and receive treatments for:

  1. Botox: Botox® in Reno, NV is administered by Dr. Talbott as a nonsurgical treatment that is injected specifically into the muscles between the brows. Botox works by blocking nerve-driving forces to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle movement that causes lines and wrinkles between the brows. (This treatment gets the #1 spot because it even has a nickname: “Bro Tox!”)

Accelerate Healing Logically and Naturally

logical and natural healing after plastic surgeryFollowing cosmetic surgery of any type, your body will need time to recover. Healing calls upon many of the body’s systems simultaneously to decrease swelling and promote repair. With hundreds of thousands of operations performed annually in this country, surgeons and patients have learned what’s needed to encourage speedy, safe recovery while minimizing inflammation and pain. Below is a list of proven techniques to get you back on your feet and looking your best post-op.

The Do’s and Don’ts

Do follow doctor and clinic discharge instructions. Follow them to the T, in fact. Simple, avoidable mistakes are made by patients following surgery that cause complications, prolonged symptoms and delayed healing. Care for your incisions, bathe as directed, and attend all your follow-up exams.

Do Not drive before it is advisable to do so. Don’t exceed physical activity limitations, including lifting more than you should. Avoid direct exposure to the sun and baby yourself for a while – it’ll pay great dividends.

Do get lots of sleep, rest and as much time off as is recommended. As sedentary as we are, Americans are increasingly sleep-deprived and stressed. Both conditions run counter to ideal healing. That said, get up on your feet and start moving as soon as possible. Moderate physical activity (short walks) promotes circulation and restoration of bowel function. It can also help prevent clotting and other post-surgical risks.

Do Not consume high-sodium and high-sugar foods and drinks. Common sense dictates that alcohol consumption is to be light, if not completely avoided. If you can help it, do not smoke. Beyond well-documented health risks, smoking impairs circulation and prevents your body from healing on many levels.

Let Food Be Thy Medicine

Hippocrates was on to something here folks. Modern medicine has amazing tools, drugs and techniques at its disposal, but healing remains a natural phenomenon. Doctors can do little to elicit healing. The body is essentially on its own to handle that part. Therefore, controlling variables and inputs, as we just described above, is perhaps the most important step a patient can take to promote healthy healing and great surgical outcomes. The most significant input of course is food. Here’s a list of important foods to consume after your procedure, if not all the time:

* Lean Proteins – Assistive with wound healing and collagen restoration – fish, poultry, meat and legumes have the protein you’re looking for.

* Probiotics – Restore healthy biotic cultures in the gut destroyed by anti-biotics – fermented dairy products like yogurt and kefir, and pickled foods like sauerkraut are packed with healthy probiotics.

* Fibrous Foods – Get your bowels moving after the blocking effects of inactivity and medications – fruits and vegetables which abound in cellulosic fiber, consumed with plenty of water, will have you back to regular quickly.

* Deeply and Brightly Colored Fruits – loaded with anti-oxidants and vitamins – peppers, oranges, blueberries, pomegranates – the list goes on and on – get plenty of them. They’re delicious and nutritious and will foster cellular repair and well-being.

* Nuts and Seeds – High in fiber and protein, nuts and seeds boast high zinc content, which is instrumental in boosting the immune system.

Closing the Loop

As the title of this post suggests, healing after surgery is dependent upon common sense, self-care and great nutrition. Give your body every possible chance for a superb outcome. Eat the foods you would if you were trying to look and feel your best – they’re the same ones you’ll need after cosmetic surgery. They’ll provide everything you need to know and what to expect before and after your surgery.

Breast Augmentation: What You Need to Know About Pre-and Post-Op

breast augmentation surgeryBreast Augmentation is a topic we can’t ever seem to put down. And no wonder – breast augmentation is the most sought-after cosmetic surgery performed in the U.S. each year. Women want fuller and better-shaped breasts. We at the Talbott Plastic Surgery Center are here to help. Let’s start by addressing some important points about what’s right for you and how to achieve optimal results from the procedure.

Before We Begin

Over 300,000 breast augmentation procedures are completed every year in this country and recent advances in techniques and implant technologies have led to increasingly successful outcomes. So, while it is a surgery, and all surgeries are to be undertaken seriously, it is so widely performed that techniques, procedures and standards are constantly being improved. That said, don’t rush into this. Take your time to think, consider and choose your surgeon, your center and how you want this procedure to work for you and your life.

Approximately 75% Of All Breast Augmentations Now Utilize Silicone.

And of those 75%, many are performed with the newest generation of silicone gel which retains uniform shape and most closely resembles natural breast tissue. Unless you have special reason, your surgeon will recommend silicone implants. While silicone is a more expensive material, the outcome and longevity of the recontouring speak for themselves. Regardless, you can expect to pay around $10,000 for a standard breast augmentation procedure.

Selecting Your Surgeon…

is perhaps the most important thing you can do. Your job boils down to researching credentials and reputation. Like Dr. Talbott, your surgeon should be board certified in reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery. She or he should also have an excellent reputation with scores of satisfied, healthy former patients. Scrutinize the before and after pics of all previous surgeries. Last, make sure that you are personally comfortable with your surgeon, the staff and the facility. Do you feel that you can connect with your surgeon? Do you feel that you’re being listened to? Be certain that your surgeon takes a strong, personal interest in your outcome and well-being.

Concerns About The Right Size And Look…

…are quickly allayed when you select the right surgeon. Great doctors will recommend the appropriate look for your physique and activity level. At the Talbott Plastic Surgery Center, every factor including lifestyle, unique physiological attributes and health history, as well as your personal goals are considered before making a recommendation about implant configuration. It’s without saying that the size of your augmentation should be naturally appropriate, appealing, reasonably proportionate and sustainable as you age. This is why pre-surgery consultations and evaluations with competent surgeons are essential, so don’t skip steps!

To Ensure The Best Results And Most Comfortable Recovery…

…you need to practice self-care and allow yourself sufficient time off. Doctor Talbott and her staff will preach and repeat the absolute must-dos for you to obtain the most beautiful results. From scheduling time off to maintaining your weight and eating nutritious foods, you’ll learn everything you need to know to succeed, but here are a few questions to help qualify you as a good candidate for surgery:

  • Are you done birthing children and breast feeding?

The Nose Job, the Procedure (and Why They Call it Rhinoplasty)

Posted on by wordadmin in Plastic Surgery, Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

rhinoplasty - aka nose job - what to expectSometime around 1845, the word Rhinoplasty was introduced to our lexicon. While it is perhaps not the most complimentary-sounding word, the results that the procedure delivers certainly are. Rhinoplasty is the proper term for what most of us simply know as a ‘nose job’. (So we understand the word “Rhinoplasty,” and not be offended by what could be misconstrued as a process to reshape a misshapen a nose; the actual word is Greek in root—rhis=nose, and plassein=to shape. That is comforting to realize, if one didn’t know what the word Rhinoplasty really represented.)

The Rhinoplasty procedure is among the five most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States.  By sculpting the cartilage and bone of the nose, surgeons give patients a new look and renewed self-confidence. Rhinoplasty restores balance to facial features by changing the size and shape of the nose and can simultaneously mitigate nasal structural problems, including respiratory impairment.

Patients considering this type of reconstructive surgery often have noses that are disproportionately large for their faces, flared or pinched nostrils, crooked or asymmetrical noses or protruding bridges. Whether the complaint is about a bump, a hump or a ski jump, men and women who are displeased with the size and shape of their nose can have almost any characteristic corrected by a reputable, board-certified surgeon.

What to Expect

Depending on the goals of the procedure, Rhinoplasty operation complexity varies significantly. Accordingly, levels of discomfort and recovery time do as well. A patient should anticipate at least 8 weeks for a full recovery and should plan to take 2 weeks off from work at the minimum. A ride home from the procedure is a must and having a care taker at home for at least a couple of days after the procedure is advisable.

Chewing can be uncomfortable after the procedure, so soft foods are recommended. As with any surgery, it is advisable to abstain from alcohol and tobacco use before and after the operation. Patients should be well rested, in good health and mentally prepared for the amazing transformation they are about to undergo.

How About Pain?

Because Rhinoplasty entails reshaping bone and cartilage in the nose, significant discomfort is to be expected afterwards. And because pain is a big concern for those considering rhinoplasty, we want to spend some time on the topic:

There’s really no getting around some of the post-operative discomfort patients feel. The face is an extremely sensitive part of the body by design, so neurons and pain receptors certainly let patients know that a significant alteration has occurred. The key to ensuring optimal aesthetic outcomes, accelerating recovery and minimizing pain lies with choosing the best surgeon.   Think of dentistry: Twenty years ago, it was accepted that a trip to the dentist was going to be uncomfortable, if not downright painful. That’s no longer the case. In fact, reputable dentists today do everything they can to eliminate pain from standard practice. Comfort and pain avoidance are leading metrics by which they are evaluated and to which they owe their reputations. While sculpting bone in the septum and bridge of nose is different than polishing teeth or fitting a retainer, the same principals apply.

Dr. Talbott is an exemplary surgeon renowned for the personal care she brings to each consultation and procedure. She also has a reputation of being among the gentlest and detail-oriented professionals in her field. Much can be done during a surgery to minimize post-procedural discomfort and Dr. Talbott is an innovator in that respect. If you are considering rhinoplasty and would like to meet with a caring professional, call or click the Talbott Plastic Surgery Center of Reno to set up a consultation.

Reconstructive Surgery in Reno: Improving Lives One Patient At A Time

reconstructive-surgery

Certain celebrities and the tabloids surely contribute to the perception, but cosmetic surgery gets a rap it doesn’t deserve. Its very mention often evokes sarcastic remarks. And it’s true, some people and their doctors have taken cosmetic, or plastic surgery too far, but what most people don’t know is that a great deal of cosmetic surgery is performed for reconstructive purposes. In fact, over 1 million reconstructive surgeries are performed in this country every year with no vainglory attached.

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is for Everyone

People who undergo reconstructive surgery span the population, from children to the elderly, women and men. Mastectomy patients often elect to have breast reconstruction to rebalance their figures. Children born with operable defects like cleft lips and palates are also great candidates. Workers who’ve been injured on the job, people who’ve been severely burned and folks involved in motor vehicle accidents commonly require the services of highly trained reconstructive surgeons.

Perhaps even lesser known, but every bit as important to folks who require such care are microsurgery and flap procedures. These operations exist to replace or resurrect organs and other parts of the body irreparably damaged by accident or disease. The ubiquity of cancer and the damage it causes to bodies makes these types of surgeries not only very common, but necessary for the health and survival of the patients who have them.

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery for the Face, Feet and Hands

It is truly incredible to see the life-changing effects reconstructive cosmetic surgery imparts to patients around the world. Children are regularly given a new life with procedures that allow them to eat, breathe, speak and smile normally again. Cranio-facial anomalies are congenital (present at birth) and manifest in multiple ways. Left untreated, such deformities often impair the development of the child, and again, often in many ways. Fortunately, because such disfigurations and defects are common, modern plastic surgical techniques can address a great majority of them to the point that people never know the child had a debilitating issue.

Feet and hands take a lot of abuse over a lifetime and require regular attention from reconstructive surgeons. Burns, lacerations, lost digits – you name it and our nation’s surgeons have addressed it. Restoring mobility, sense, appearance and function are all parts of the objective because we all realize how challenging day-to-day life becomes with compromised extremities.

There are thousands of applications for reconstructive surgery. Miraculous restoration to the health, motility and appearance of individuals occurs every hour of every day in this country. Unlike elective cosmetic procedures, most reconstructive care is covered by insurance. If you, your child, or a loved one needs the special care of a competent, board certified surgeon, reach out and schedule a consultation with the Talbott Plastic Surgery Center. You’ll recognize the professionalism and respect from the moment you arrive and the hope and superior level of care that awaits.
